What God's People Do
Scripture’s story begins with humankind in a lush and wild garden.
Some scholars suggest the garden was not pristine and idyllic as we often imagine. It was wild. It needed work. And we were put there to “do something” with it.
This co-operative stewardship with God is the plot-line of the Bible’s story – describing what it really mens to be the “People of God.”
Every bit of our human-ness was designed by God to participate with Him as co-creators.
When sin entered the picture the story-line shifted. But only slightly.
Now, nested within our calling as co-creators is a calling to be co-redeemers!
These two tasks are practically synonymous: co-creating and co-redeeming. One brings order from chaos. The other mends what it broken.
Both are acts of stewardship. Both bring about beauty and order.
In our tribe, we refer to that plot-line as the foundation of who we are in our home, in our family, and in the world: We were made to bring beauty and order to God’s creation. (Genesis 1:26-19; 2:15)
By simply recalling this plot-line in our home, even our toddlers have learned to use it as a frame of reference for their attitudes and actions. Consequently, so have Sarah and I.
