God Is In Your Children

God is present to you through your children.

For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.
– Romans 11:36a

In the first centuries of Christianity the early theologians understood they had been visited by the Creator of all things. It shook them to their core. Their view of the created world was turned inside out.

With a sense of awe they recognized: everything they saw around them came from the mind of the Creator. It exists and is sustained as a means for us to know Him more intimately.

For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what has been made.
– Romans 1:20

Just as the work of human artists communicate something about who they are – each part of creation has always been an “expression” from God, about Himself, to us.

But among all His creation, humans are the pinnacle. Intended to reflect Himself to one other in ways we have only begun to understand. To embody Him to each other with our mere presence.

It is with this sense of awe that we relate to our children. They stand before us as an embodied image of their Creator – far more than a puzzle to be solved, a demand on our time, or a curious mind to put off.

And it is this sense of awe which makes loving a family member with special needs – or a difficult family member – an honor, a privilege, and a gift.
